Recycled computers have therapeutic value to autistic Matthew

Added: 7 March 2012

Waste King, the environmentally-friendly specialist collections, clearance and recycling company, has found an unusual outlet for it to recycle old computers.

It has given a number of old computers – discarded by its customers – to Matthew, a young man who has severe autism and a complete fascination with computers. Matthew will take these computers apart and re-build them - purely for therapeutic purposes - because doing this helps him to cope with his condition.Mathew__Paul.png

Waste King became aware of Matthew and the way that he copes with his condition when Waste King’s managing director, Glenn Currie, met Paul Morris, a Community Support Worker, working with the South East Oxfordshire Community Mental Health Trust.

Currie commented: “When Paul told us about Matthew and how the discarded computers that we collect can help him cope with his autism, Waste King was delighted to help.

“For one thing, Waste King guarantees to recycle at least 85 per cent of all the waste it collects – and giving the computers to Matthew goes towards the company continuing to live up to its extremely demanding environmentally-friendly targets.

“For another, children and young people with autism need to be encouraged to enjoy learning experiences tailored to their very specific requirements.

“According to the National Autistic Society, there are over 500,000 people with autism in the UK - that is one in 100,” he added. “Together with their families, that is over two million people whose lives are touched by autism every single day.

“If Waste King can do something – however small – to help these people get more out of life, it’s delighted to do so.”

Waste King provides a wide range of waste collection and recycling services for both domestic and commercial clients including house clearances, office clearance, shop refurbishments, general rubbish removal, garden & garage clearance, wait & load and skip hire, as well as services to companies in the fields of property management and maintenance; interior design; specialist renovation, and general construction.

Its recycling and waste collection services include waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collections and site waste management plans (SWMP).  The company also offers confidential document destruction.

recycling with the trash vs putting it on the curb, the whole precoss has become MUCH easier. In the past, I would keep an extra large canvas bag near where I did my mail to deposit the mixed paper. It would get so full that it was too heavy for me to carry out to the corner. Now that I can simply put all of the recycling in the blue box inside the trash holder -from cans and bottles to bill pay envelopes and newspapers- I find that I am a much better recycler than I was in the past. And then there's the privacy issue ..You can't tell me that while walking your dog or going to the school bus, you didn't peer into your neighbor's blue box on the curb? Sort of like checking the medicine chest in the bathroom of a home you are a guest in!

Many curbside relyiccng programs ask that you remove any lids or caps from bottles. For one thing this allows the bottles to dry out reducing transportation costs by reducing weight . And some by plastic shards and tiny lids..Most importantly plastic bottle caps are often made from a different type of plastic from the bottles theyre attached to.
